Balkan Music
Balkan music is what happens when brass bands, Roma wedding music, Ottoman influences, and punk energy collide in one village. Goran Bregović soundtracked Kusturica's films. Fanfare Ciocărlia play 200 BPM brass marches. Boban Marković leads the world's best Serbian brass orchestra. This is the music of wedding parades that last three days, whiskey-soaked dance floors, and the most life-affirming chaos Europe has ever produced.
Why It Works

History
Balkan music developed at the crossroads of four major traditions: Slavic folk, Ottoman maqam, Roma migratory music, and Byzantine Orthodox chant. The brass band tradition specifically exploded in the 19th century when Ottoman janissary bands disbanded and village musicians adopted their instruments. The Guča Trumpet Festival in Serbia (since 1961) became the annual Olympics of Balkan brass — Boban Marković won it a record number of times.
Goran Bregović's work with Emir Kusturica on the films Time of the Gypsies (1988), Underground (1995), and Black Cat White Cat (1998) exported the Balkan sound to global audiences. Fanfare Ciocărlia's 2002 album Iag Bari hit number one on the World Music charts and launched the Balkan brass revival across Europe.
Legacy & Influence
Balkan music directly influenced every eastern European brass scene that followed — Beirut (Zach Condon's band), Gogol Bordello, DeVotchKa. The Balkan sound soundtracked half of Wes Anderson's films (Hotel Chevalier, Darjeeling Limited). Bregović's Ederlezi has been covered by 200+ artists across 40+ countries.
The annual Guča Festival in Serbia draws 600,000 attendees in a village of 2,000 people — the biggest music festival per capita on Earth. This is not academic folk music. It is the most dangerous music in Europe to dance to.

Balkan Music — FAQ
What is Balkan music?
Balkan music refers to the traditional and popular music of Southeastern Europe — Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, and neighboring regions. It is characterized by brass bands, asymmetric rhythms (7/8, 9/8, 11/8), Ottoman-influenced modal scales, and Roma (gypsy) musical traditions. Goran Bregović and Fanfare Ciocărlia are the most internationally recognized Balkan artists.
Who is Goran Bregović?
Goran Bregović is a Bosnian composer famous for soundtracking Emir Kusturica's films — Time of the Gypsies (1988), Underground (1995), and Arizona Dream (1993). His most famous tracks are Ederlezi, Kalashnikov, and Gas Gas. Before his film-score career, he led the legendary Yugoslav rock band Bijelo Dugme in the 1970s-80s. He is the most commercially successful artist in Balkan music history.
What is Roma (gypsy) music?
Roma music is the traditional music of the Romani people, who migrated from northern India to Europe starting around 1000 AD. Roma musicians preserved and adapted local folk traditions wherever they settled, creating regional hybrids across the Balkans. Fanfare Ciocărlia and Taraf de Haïdouks are the best-known contemporary Roma groups in the world. Their music is fast, virtuosic, and built around brass and string instruments.
Is Balkan music good for parties?
Balkan music is some of the most high-energy party music on Earth — brass bands playing 180-200 BPM is physically impossible to sit still to. The Guča Festival in Serbia draws 600,000 people annually for continuous Balkan brass. That said, start with mid-tempo tracks (Ederlezi, Misirlou) and build to the high-BPM fanfare (Kalashnikov, Born to be Wild) so the crowd can warm up.
What movies use Balkan music?
Emir Kusturica's entire filmography (Underground, Black Cat White Cat, Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream) features Bregović scores. Borat (2006) used Fanfare Ciocărlia for its most iconic scenes. Everything Is Illuminated (2005) has a Gogol Bordello soundtrack. Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited (2007) and Hotel Chevalier feature Balkan-adjacent tracks. The Constant Gardener (2005) used Bregović's Gas Gas Gas.
