Biography
Tim Bergling was born on September 8, 1989, in Stockholm. He started producing in his bedroom as a teenager, posting tracks on music forums, and took the name Avicii from a Buddhist term for the lowest level of hell.
Levels, released in 2011, made him one of the biggest DJs in the world. He retired from touring in 2016 for his health and died on April 20, 2018, in Muscat, Oman. His family set up the Tim Bergling Foundation for mental health.
History
True came out in September 2013. Wake Me Up, with Aloe Blacc singing and Mike Einziger of Incubus on guitar, reached number one in more than twenty countries, and Hey Brother and Addicted to You followed. Stories arrived in October 2015 with Waiting for Love and The Nights.
TIM was finished by his collaborators from the demos he left and released in June 2019, with SOS, sung by Aloe Blacc, as the first single. Levels, Silhouettes, I Could Be the One with Nicky Romero and Lonely Together with Rita Ora were released outside the albums and are in the Greatest Hits playlist.
Legacy & Influence
Avicii brought melody back into EDM at the height of the drop era, and his mix of folk songwriting with dance production opened the door for a decade of radio hits that sound the same way. Levels is still one of the most played dance records ever.
