Daft Punk were two French producers in robot helmets who made four studio albums in sixteen years, and each one changed what dance music sounded like. Homework is raw Chicago house played from Paris, Discovery is disco and pop filtered through a sampler, Human After All is loud and repetitive on purpose, and Random Access Memories went back to live musicians and won Album of the Year. 53 songs here, from Da Funk to Contact.

Why It Works

Discovery is the easy start, bright and melodic, good for cooking, cleaning or a long drive. Homework is for a workout or a party, all four-on-the-floor. Random Access Memories is the headphones album, with Nile Rodgers on guitar and Giorgio Moroder telling his own story.

Why Mixtuby

Mixtuby plays every Daft Punk album in order, so Discovery still runs from One More Time straight into Aerodynamic the way it was sequenced. Biography

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo met at school in Paris in 1987. After a short-lived rock band called Darlin', they turned to house and techno, and a bad review calling their music "daft punky thrash" gave them their name.

They released their first single, The New Wave, in 1994, signed with Virgin, and from the late nineties appeared only in helmets and costumes. They announced their split in February 2021.

History

Homework came out in January 1997, with Da Funk and Around the World as singles. Discovery followed in March 2001 and turned toward disco, soft rock and vocoder pop, with One More Time, Digital Love and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, which Kanye West later sampled for Stronger.

Human After All, recorded in about six weeks, arrived in 2005. Their 2006 and 2007 live shows inside a lit pyramid became famous, and in 2010 they wrote the score for Tron: Legacy. Random Access Memories, released in May 2013, was made with session musicians, Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams.

Get Lucky became one of the biggest songs of the year, and the album won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Legacy & Influence

Daft Punk showed that dance music could be made as albums, not just singles for DJs, and that a pair of producers could become as recognisable as a band without ever showing their faces. Their filtered disco sound shaped French house, and the vocoder and robot image are copied to this day.
