Why It Works

The list moves from a dusty bounty hunter in For a Few Dollars More to a brawling trucker with an orangutan, a hunted cop and a quiet love story in Iowa. Eastwood says little and means all of it, so the films are easy to follow with subtitles on, even for someone still learning English.

Biography

Clint Eastwood was born on May 31, 1930, in San Francisco. He worked as a lifeguard and a logger, served in the Army, and began in small parts at Universal in the mid-1950s before the television western Rawhide made him known.

As a director he has won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture twice, for Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), and he was still making films past the age of ninety.

History

Sergio Leone took him to Spain to play a quiet gunman in A Fistful of Dollars (1964), followed by For a Few Dollars More (1965) with Lee Van Cleef and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Back in America he made westerns with Don Siegel, among them Two Mules for Sister Sara with Shirley MacLaine.

Later came the comedy hit Every Which Way but Loose, the thriller Tightrope, and his own films as director — A Perfect World with Kevin Costner and The Bridges of Madison County with Meryl Streep.

Legacy & Influence

The poncho, the cigar and the squint from the Leone films changed what a western hero looks like, and Ennio Morricone's music for them is still everywhere. As a director he became known for working fast, with few takes and a calm set.

Few actors have stayed at the top for as long — more than sixty years in front of and behind the camera.
