John Wayne was the face of the American western for half a century — a tall, slow-talking man in a big hat who stood for the law, the frontier and a handshake that meant something. These are his cinema films from 1940 to his last one, The Shootist, in 1976, whole and in English.

Why It Works

His films are simple in the best way — a clear hero, open country, a fair fight and a bit of humour on the side. They suit a quiet evening, an old parent who grew up with them, or anyone learning English, because Wayne speaks slowly and every word is easy to follow with subtitles on.

Biography

John Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, and grew up in California. A shoulder injury ended his football scholarship, and he found work moving props at Fox, where he met the director John Ford. Friends called him "Duke", after his dog, and the name stayed with him all his life.

He played in more than 170 films. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for True Grit in 1970, and died of cancer on June 11, 1979, in Los Angeles.

History

After a decade of small westerns, Stagecoach (1939) made him a star. In the 1940s he worked mostly for Republic Pictures — Dark Command, Lady for a Night, In Old Oklahoma, Flame of Barbary Coast, Angel and the Badman, Wake of the Red Witch — and with John Ford on They Were Expendable and the cavalry films.

In the 1960s and 1970s he made the big colour westerns: McLintock!, The Undefeated with Rock Hudson, Rio Lobo with Howard Hawks, and a police film, McQ. His last film, The Shootist (1976), is about an old gunfighter who learns he is dying.

Legacy & Influence

Wayne's way of walking and talking became shorthand for the cowboy in every country that ever showed a western. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom after his death, and the airport in Orange County, California, carries his name.

His films still play on television every weekend, and they remain one of the easiest ways into old Hollywood.
