Biography

Pink Floyd was formed in London in 1965 by Syd Barrett (guitar, vocals), Nick Mason (drums), Roger Waters (bass, vocals), and Richard Wright (keyboards). David Gilmour joined in 1968, initially to cover for the increasingly erratic Barrett, who was suffering from mental health issues exacerbated by drug use. Barrett left shortly after, and Gilmour became a permanent member.

Pink Floyd's sound is defined by philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, extended compositions, and elaborate live shows. David Gilmour's emotive guitar work, Richard Wright's atmospheric keyboards, Roger Waters' conceptual songwriting, and Nick Mason's precise drumming created a unique sonic palette. They pioneered the use of multitrack recording, synthesizers, and sound effects in rock music, creating immersive experiences rather than conventional songs.

With estimated sales of over 250 million records worldwide, Pink Floyd is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The Dark Side of the Moon spent a record 937 weeks on the Billboard 200. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

Their influence spans progressive rock, art rock, ambient, post-rock, and virtually every genre that values atmosphere and concept.

History

Pink Floyd began as a psychedelic band under Syd Barrett's creative leadership. Their 1967 debut The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was a cornerstone of British psychedelia. After Barrett's departure, the band evolved through experimental albums like Ummagumma (1969) and Atom Heart Mother (1970), gradually developing their signature atmospheric sound.

The classic era began with Meddle (1971) and its 23-minute epic Echoes, which laid the groundwork for The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) — one of the greatest albums ever made, spending 937 weeks on the Billboard 200 and selling over 45 million copies. Wish You Were Here (1975), a tribute to Barrett, and Animals (1977) continued their artistic and commercial dominance. The Wall (1979), Roger Waters' rock opera about isolation, produced their only No.

1 single (Another Brick in the Wall Part 2) and sold over 30 million copies. It was adapted into a 1982 film. The Final Cut (1983) was the last album with Waters, who left acrimoniously in 1985.

David Gilmour led the band through A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994), both supported by massive world tours. A brief reunion at Live 8 in 2005 was their last performance together. The Endless River (2014), built from 1993 sessions, was their final album.

Richard Wright passed away in 2008.

Legacy & Influence

Pink Floyd's influence on music is immeasurable. They essentially invented the concept of album-oriented rock, where albums were complete artistic statements rather than collections of singles. Their innovations in studio recording, live performance (with elaborate lighting, projections, and inflatables), and conceptual storytelling influenced countless artists from Radiohead and Tool to Tame Impala and Porcupine Tree.

Commercially, their numbers are staggering: over 250 million records sold, The Dark Side of the Moon as one of the top 5 best-selling albums of all time, The Wall as one of the top 10, and combined tour grosses exceeding $500 million. Their 1994 Division Bell tour was the highest-grossing tour of the year. Pink Floyd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Brit Awards, and The Dark Side of the Moon was preserved in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.

Their music continues to sell millions annually — over 50 years after release, The Dark Side of the Moon still regularly charts worldwide.
