Led Zeppelin formed in London in 1968, born from the ashes of the Yardbirds. Guitarist Jimmy Page recruited vocalist Robert Plant, bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham to create what would become the most influential rock band of the 1970s. Their chemistry was immediate and explosive, recording their debut album in just 30 hours of studio time.

The band's musical style defied easy categorization. While they are credited with pioneering heavy metal, their sound encompassed blues rock, folk, psychedelia, and Eastern influences. Led Zeppelin's debut album (1969) and Led Zeppelin II (1969) established them as a commercial force, with Whole Lotta Love becoming their signature early hit. Led Zeppelin III (1970) surprised fans with its acoustic folk direction, featuring the iconic Immigrant Song. Then came the untitled fourth album (1971), containing Stairway to Heaven — widely considered the greatest rock song ever written.

Houses of the Holy (1973) expanded their sonic palette with funk, reggae, and progressive elements. Physical Graffiti (1975), their ambitious double album, featured Kashmir — a song that epitomized their genre-blending ambition. These mid-career albums represent the creative peak of one of rock's greatest bands.

Presence (1976) was recorded in just 18 days while Plant recovered from a car accident, showcasing raw intensity. In Through the Out Door (1979) explored synthesizer-driven territory. Tragedy struck on September 25, 1980, when John Bonham died, and the remaining members dissolved the band, declaring they could not continue without him.

Coda (1982) collected unreleased recordings as a posthumous tribute.

Led Zeppelin's influence on modern rock and heavy metal is immeasurable. They created the template for the arena rock band, pioneered the concept of the album-oriented rock act, and demonstrated that commercial success and artistic ambition were not mutually exclusive. Their refusal to release singles in the UK forced fans to buy albums, helping establish the album as rock's primary artistic format.

With over 300 million records sold, they remain one of the top five best-selling music acts of all time. Stairway to Heaven is the most requested song in the history of US FM radio. Their influence extends across generations — from Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in the 1970s to Soundgarden and the White Stripes in later decades.
