Biography

Queen was formed in London in 1970 by Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar), Roger Taylor (drums), and John Deacon (bass). All four members were accomplished musicians — May built his own guitar (the Red Special), Mercury had a near-four-octave vocal range, Taylor was a skilled multi-instrumentalist, and Deacon engineered many of the band's hit recordings.

Their sound defied categorization, seamlessly blending hard rock with opera, progressive rock, funk, disco, and pop. Mercury's theatrical stage presence, May's distinctive guitar tone (created using a sixpence as a pick), and the band's legendary four-part harmonies created a sonic identity that no other band has successfully replicated.

With estimated sales of 250-300 million records worldwide, Queen is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and their music continues to reach new audiences through the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed over $900 million and won four Academy Awards including Best Actor for Rami Malek.

History

The early years (1970-1974) saw Queen emerge from the London college music scene. Their self-titled debut (1973) introduced their progressive hard rock sound, while Queen II (1974) and Sheer Heart Attack (1974) established them as a major force with hits like Killer Queen and Seven Seas of Rhye.

The golden era (1975-1980) began with A Night at the Opera (1975), which contained Bohemian Rhapsody — a six-minute operatic rock masterpiece that topped the UK charts for nine weeks. A Day at the Races, News of the World (We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions), Jazz (Don't Stop Me Now), and The Game (Another One Bites the Dust, Crazy Little Thing Called Love) cemented Queen as stadium rock royalty.

The experimental period (1982-1986) saw Queen explore funk, synth-pop, and soundtrack work. Hot Space (1982) featured the David Bowie collaboration Under Pressure. The Works (1984) spawned Radio Ga Ga and I Want to Break Free, leading to their legendary Live Aid performance at Wembley on July 13, 1985 — widely regarded as the greatest live rock performance of all time. A Kind of Magic (1986) and the Magic Tour followed.

The final chapters (1989-1995) were marked by Freddie Mercury's declining health. The Miracle (1989) and Innuendo (1991) produced powerful work including I Want It All, The Show Must Go On, and These Are the Days of Our Lives. Mercury passed away on November 24, 1991. The posthumous Made in Heaven (1995) used his final recordings and became the UK's best-selling album of the year. Brian May and Roger Taylor continue performing as Queen + Adam Lambert, selling out stadiums worldwide.

Legacy & Influence

Queen's influence on popular music is immeasurable. They pioneered the music video format (Bohemian Rhapsody, 1975), popularized stadium rock anthems, and proved that rock music could embrace opera, ballet, and theatrical performance without losing its edge. Bands from Foo Fighters to Muse to Panic! at the Disco cite Queen as a primary influence.

Their commercial achievements are staggering: over 250 million records sold, 18 number-one albums, 18 number-one singles, and consistently sold-out world tours across five decades. We Will Rock You became a global musical that ran for 12 years in London's West End. The 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody grossed $911 million, making it the highest-grossing musical biographical film of all time.

Awards and recognition include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2001), the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2018), the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music (1990), and Bohemian Rhapsody being voted the greatest song of all time by multiple polls. In 2002, Freddie Mercury was ranked number 58 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. Their Live Aid performance was voted the greatest live performance in the history of rock music.
