Pop music as a distinct commercial genre crystallized in the late 1950s from the consolidation of rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and traditional pop standards. The launch of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958 formalized the chart culture that would define pop ever since. The Beatles redefined the format in the 1960s as both artistically serious and commercially massive, and Motown gave pop a soul-driven counterpart through The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye.

Disco took over the late 1970s, MTV (launched 1981) made the music video a primary marketing tool, and Michael Jackson's Thriller (1982) became the best-selling album of all time at over 70 million copies. The 1990s brought boy bands and girl groups (Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls), the 2000s introduced Auto-Tune-driven digital pop, and the 2010s streaming era is dominated by Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, BTS, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande. By the 2020s, TikTok had become the primary launchpad for new pop singles, with songs going viral months before any radio play.

Pop music built the modern music industry's commercial infrastructure — radio promotion, music videos, global touring, merchandise lines, brand partnerships, and streaming-era playlist economies all trace back to pop industry experiments. The genre defined the celebrity template that now governs entertainment globally, and it remains the largest segment of global music revenue, with top pop artists generating billions across multiple revenue streams. Pop also sets the production benchmark every other genre is measured against — modern country, hip-hop, and even rock records aim for "pop-quality" mixing and arrangement.
