Winnetou Movies
Winnetou, chief of the Mescalero Apaches, and his blood brother Old Shatterhand come from the novels of Karl May. In the 1960s German cinema turned them into eleven westerns with Pierre Brice as Winnetou and Lex Barker, Stewart Granger and Rod Cameron as the white hunters at his side, filmed among the lakes, canyons and mountains of what was then Yugoslavia.

Why It Works
These are adventure films for the whole family — wide landscapes, horses, honest friendship and very little blood. They were made for the big screen and they still look best on one. Start with The Treasure of the Silver Lake or Winnetou 1 and the rest follow on their own.

Biography
Karl May (1842–1912) wrote his Winnetou novels in Saxony, long before he ever travelled to America. The books made the Apache chief and his German friend Old Shatterhand the best-known heroes of the Wild West in Central and Eastern Europe.
Pierre Brice, a French actor, played Winnetou in every film of the series and became the face of the character for the rest of his life. Lex Barker, an American who had played Tarzan, was Old Shatterhand.
History
Der Schatz im Silbersee (The Treasure of the Silver Lake) opened in 1962 and was a huge success, so the films kept coming: the Winnetou trilogy (1963–1965), Old Shatterhand (1964), Unter Geiern and Der Ölprinz with Stewart Granger as Old Surehand, Old Surehand itself (1965), Winnetou und das Halbblut Apanatschi and Winnetou und sein Freund Old Firehand with Rod Cameron (1966), and finally Winnetou und Shatterhand im Tal der Toten (1968), the last time Brice and Barker rode together.
Most of the films were shot in Croatia — the Plitvice Lakes stand in for the Silver Lake — and Martin Böttcher's music for them is still played at Karl May festivals in Germany.
Legacy & Influence
For generations in Germany, Romania, Hungary, Czechia, Poland and the former Yugoslavia, Winnetou was the western. The films are shown on television every holiday, and open-air Karl May festivals in Bad Segeberg and Elspe still stage the stories every summer.
Winnetou dies at the end of the third film, and many people still remember where they were when they first saw it.
