Europe was formed in Upplands Vasby, Sweden in 1979 by vocalist Joey Tempest and guitarist John Norum. The classic lineup — completed by bassist John Leven, drummer Ian Haugland, and keyboardist Mic Michaeli — became one of the most successful rock bands of the 1980s. John Norum briefly left the band in 1986 but returned for their 2004 reunion.

Europe's sound evolved dramatically over their career. Their early albums blended Scandinavian melodic sensibility with hard rock and glam metal, defined by Joey Tempest's powerful vocals and John Norum's virtuosic guitar work. The Final Countdown's iconic synthesizer riff (played by Mic Michaeli) became one of the most recognizable hooks in music history.

The album sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Out of This World (1988) continued their success with Superstitious and Let the Good Times Rock. Prisoners in Paradise (1991) was their last album before a 13-year hiatus, during which members pursued solo careers — most notably John Norum's acclaimed guitar work and Joey Tempest's solo albums.

The band reunited in 2003 and released Start from the Dark (2004), signaling a dramatic shift toward heavier, more mature rock. This creative renaissance continued through Secret Society (2006), Last Look at Eden (2009), Bag of Bones (2012), War of Kings (2015), and Walk the Earth (2017) — each album earning strong critical reviews and proving Europe was far more than a one-hit wonder. Their post-reunion era is widely regarded as some of their finest work, with War of Kings and Walk the Earth frequently cited as career highlights alongside The Final Countdown.

Europe's impact on rock music extends far beyond The Final Countdown, though that song alone has become a permanent part of global pop culture — played at sporting events, celebrations, and New Year's countdowns worldwide. It remains one of the most-played rock songs in history with billions of streams across platforms. The band proved that artistic reinvention is possible.
