Why It Works

The 1975 to 1987 albums are some of the most comfortable listening in rock, good for a drive, a Sunday morning or cooking. The early Peter Green records are slower, guitar-led blues for the evening.

Why Mixtuby

Biography

Fleetwood Mac were formed in London in 1967 by guitarist Peter Green with drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, who gave the band its name. Green left in 1970, and keyboardist and singer Christine McVie joined the same year.

After several line-up changes, Fleetwood invited the American duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to join at the end of 1974. That five-piece made the band's best-known records. Fleetwood Mac were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

History

Their 1968 debut, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, was a British blues hit, and singles like Albatross and Oh Well followed. Then Play On in 1969 was their last album with Green.

The 1975 album Fleetwood Mac, with Rhiannon, Landslide and Say You Love Me, went to number one in the US. Rumours, recorded in 1976 while both couples in the band were breaking up, came out in February 1977 and became one of the best-selling albums ever, with Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don't Stop and The Chain. Tusk in 1979 was stranger and more experimental.

Mirage in 1982 and Tango in the Night in 1987, with Little Lies and Everywhere, brought them back to the charts. Say You Will in 2003 was their last studio album.

Legacy & Influence

Rumours is the record people mean when they talk about turning private pain into pop songs, and Dreams found a whole new audience on social media in 2020. Three songwriters with very different voices made one sound, and that balance is why the albums still hold up.
