Biography

Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, USA. He began performing with his brothers as the Jackson 5 at age five, quickly becoming the group's standout star. His solo career launched in 1971 with Motown Records, where he released four albums before making the pivotal move to Epic Records in 1975.

Jackson's musical style defied categorization, seamlessly blending pop, R&B, soul, funk, disco, dance-pop, and new jack swing. His collaboration with legendary producer Quincy Jones on Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), and Bad (1987) produced some of the most innovative and commercially successful music ever recorded. His vocal range, rhythmic precision, and revolutionary music videos — particularly Thriller's 14-minute short film — changed the entertainment industry forever.

Commercially, Jackson holds records that may never be broken: Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time with over 70 million copies sold. He won 13 Grammy Awards, including 8 in a single night for Thriller. He was the first solo artist to have 4 top-10 singles from one album (Off the Wall) and the first to have 5 #1 singles from one album (Bad). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice — as a member of the Jackson 5 in 1997 and as a solo artist in 2001.

History

Jackson's solo career at Motown produced four albums: Got to Be There and Ben (both 1972), Music & Me (1973), and Forever, Michael (1975). The title track "Ben" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 when Jackson was just 14 years old.

The move to Epic Records and the partnership with Quincy Jones transformed Jackson into a global superstar. Off the Wall (1979) became the first solo album to spawn 4 top-10 hits. Thriller (1982) shattered every record — spending 37 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard and breaking MTV's racial barriers with its groundbreaking music videos.

Bad (1987) achieved an unprecedented 5 #1 singles. Dangerous (1991), produced with Teddy Riley, embraced new jack swing while delivering humanitarian anthems like Heal the World. The epic double album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I (1995) combined 15 greatest hits with 15 new tracks including Scream, Earth Song, and They Don't Care About Us.

His final studio album Invincible (2001) debuted at #1 in 13 countries. Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, in Los Angeles, but his music continues to inspire and dominate charts worldwide.

Legacy & Influence

Michael Jackson's cultural impact is immeasurable. He popularized the moonwalk, revolutionized music videos as an art form, broke racial barriers on MTV, and proved that pop music could be both commercially massive and artistically groundbreaking. His influence spans every genre of popular music.

With over 500 million records sold, 13 Grammy Awards, 26 American Music Awards, and the best-selling album in human history, Jackson's commercial achievements stand alone in music history. His humanitarian work, including "We Are the World" and his support for dozens of charities, reflected his belief in music's power to change the world.

Decades after his passing, Jackson remains the benchmark against which all pop artists are measured. His music, dance moves, and visual artistry continue to inspire new generations of performers, and Thriller's record-breaking status endures as perhaps the most remarkable achievement in recorded music history.
