Rhythm and Blues emerged in the 1940s from African American musical traditions — the deep grooves of blues, the harmonic vocabulary of jazz, the call-and-response of Black gospel churches. Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, and Ruth Brown defined the early sound on labels like Atlantic and King. In 1959 Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in Detroit and turned R&B into a chart machine, launching The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder while engineering an unmistakable house sound.

Down in Memphis, Stax Records pushed a grittier counterpart with Otis Redding, Booker T. & the M.G.

's, and Sam & Dave. Aretha Franklin's 'Respect' (1967) reframed the genre as a vehicle for civil rights and personal power. The 1980s brought new jack swing (Teddy Riley, Bobby Brown), the 1990s delivered Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, TLC, and Destiny's Child to global pop dominance, and the 2010s opened the door to alternative R&B as Frank Ocean's Channel Orange (2012) and The Weeknd's Trilogy mixtapes turned introspection and atmosphere into commercial gold.

R&B is the foundation of American popular music. Its grooves run through soul, funk, disco, hip-hop, neo-soul, and almost every contemporary pop record released today. Modern vocal phrasing — the runs, melisma, and falsetto leaps heard everywhere from Beyoncé to Bruno Mars — was codified inside R&B studios decades ago.

The genre's emotional vocabulary now shapes UK grime, Afrobeats, K-pop, Latin urban, and the entire streaming-era ballad economy. Artists like SZA, H.E.

R., Daniel Caesar, and Cleo Sol prove the bloodline is still expanding into new sonic territory in the 2020s.
