Travis Scott — From Rodeo to UTOPIA, Every Album

Travis Scott was born Jacques Bermon Webster II on April 30, 1991, in Houston, Texas. Houston runs through everything he has made. His third album is named after a theme park the city lost, and the slowed, syrupy sound of the local scene shows up in his production again and again.

He started out as a producer as much as a rapper, and you can hear it. His songs are built in layers: auto-tuned ad-libs, distorted synths, choirs, and beats that stop halfway through and turn into a different song. His voice is often treated like one more instrument in the mix, which is why a Travis Scott track can sound huge even when the lyric is simple.

The chart run came fast once it started. Rodeo reached number three on the Billboard 200 in 2015. Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight went to number one a year later, and ASTROWORLD and UTOPIA both debuted at number one after it.

SICKO MODE, with Drake, gave him his first Billboard Hot 100 number one in December 2018.

Rodeo came out in 2015 and it is still the best place to hear how he thinks. Pornography opens it, 3500 stretches past seven minutes, and Antidote is the single that broke him to a wider audience. The album moves like a movie, with songs bleeding into each other instead of stopping.

Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight followed in 2016. It is the moodier record, heavy on late-night atmosphere, and it has goosebumps with Kendrick Lamar and pick up the phone. It was his first album to top the Billboard 200.

ASTROWORLD arrived on August 3, 2018, named after Six Flags AstroWorld, the Houston theme park that closed in 2005. BUTTERFLY EFFECT had been out as the lead single since May 2017. The album moved 537,000 units in its first US week, and SICKO MODE climbed to number one in its seventeenth week on the Hot 100, beat switches and all.

ASTROWORLD was nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammys. In April 2020 his Astronomical concert inside Fortnite drew more than 12.3 million concurrent players, a record for the game at the time.

In November 2021, ten people died in a crowd crush at his Astroworld Festival in Houston. UTOPIA came in July 2023 with the concert film Circus Maximus alongside it. It opened with 496,000 units, the biggest hip-hop debut of that year, and became his third number one album.

Travis Scott changed what a rap album sounds like as a whole. A lot of artists after 2015 picked up the habit of the mid-song beat switch, the stacked ad-libs, the album that plays as one long piece. SICKO MODE went to number one while switching beats partway through, and that made the idea feel normal.

He also showed that a rap show could be an event people travel to, online as well as in person. The Fortnite concert is still the example people bring up when they talk about music inside games.
