Biography
Aubrey Drake Graham was born October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He started as a child actor, playing wheelchair-bound Jimmy Brooks on the Canadian teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation from 2001 to 2007. That backstory became the first thing critics used against him — and the first thing Drake turned into armor.
By 2009, his mixtape So Far Gone had gone viral without a major label deal, earning him a Grammy nomination and a bidding war.
Drake's sound sits at the exact intersection of rap and R&B — melodic hooks over hip-hop production, with lyrics that swing between braggadocio and emotional vulnerability. He popularized "emo rap" before that was a genre, made it acceptable for rappers to talk about feelings, and brought Toronto's sound — the OVO wave — to global stages. His ear for production is exceptional.
He's worked with Noah "40" Shebib on almost every album, creating a sound often described as cold, atmospheric, nocturnal.
Commercially, Drake is in his own category. He holds the record for the most entries on the Billboard Hot 100 (over 250 songs charted), the most No. 1 singles among solo artists, and multiple streaming records.
He's won four Grammy Awards, been named Artist of the Decade at the Billboard Music Awards, and sold over 170 million records worldwide. OVO Sound, his label, launched artists like PartyNextDoor, Majid Jordan, and Roy Woods.
History
Drake's commercial debut Thank Me Later (2010) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, fueled by Over and Find Your Love. His 2011 follow-up Take Care won the Grammy for Best Rap Album and is widely considered his artistic peak — Marvins Room and Headlines defined a generation of vulnerable rap.
Nothing Was the Same (2013) solidified his status: Started from the Bottom became an anthem, and Hold On, We're Going Home crossed into pop radio.
Views (2016) spent 13 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — the longest of any rap album ever. One Dance spent 10 weeks at No.
1 on the Hot 100 and became one of the best-selling singles of all time. Scorpion (2018) was a double album addressing the public revelation that he had a son — it broke Apple Music and Spotify streaming records on release day. God's Plan spent 11 weeks at No.
1.
Certified Lover Boy (2021) debuted at No. 1 in 15 countries. His 2022 album Honestly, Nevermind surprised everyone by going full dance and house music — it divided fans but showed genuine artistic risk.
For All The Dogs (2023) was a return to rap, with Slime You Out debuting at No. 1 and First Person Shooter featuring J. Cole igniting one of hip-hop's biggest conversations.
The mid-2020s brought Drake's most public challenge: a rap beef with Kendrick Lamar that produced Not Like Us, which won five Grammys in 2025 including Record of the Year. Drake's response and the fallout reshaped conversations about his legacy — proof that even at his most embattled, Drake remains the center of hip-hop's universe.
Legacy & Influence
Drake's influence on hip-hop and pop music is impossible to overstate. He mainstreamed emotional vulnerability in rap, pioneered the "singing rapper" archetype later perfected by artists like Post Malone and Juice WRLD, and brought Toronto onto the global music map permanently. The phrase "started from the bottom" entered everyday language.
The "Hotline Bling" dance became a cultural meme before memes were the primary language of pop culture.
Statistically, Drake is in a class alone. More than 250 Billboard Hot 100 entries. More No.
1 albums than any rap artist. Streaming records on every platform. He's headlined festivals on six continents, sold out stadiums worldwide, and remained commercially dominant for 15 years — an eternity in the attention economy of modern music.
