The Weeknd Player
Blinding Lights spent 90 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 — the longest run in the chart's history. That's The Weeknd in one statistic. Abel Tesfaye built one of pop music's most distinctive worlds from nothing, literally anonymous at the start, and became the first artist to hit 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The dark pop thing? He invented it.
Why It Works
The Weeknd's music has a specific superpower — it sounds equally incredible through headphones at midnight and through a festival speaker at noon. After Hours for introspection, Starboy for energy, Beauty Behind the Madness for the commute. It's cinematic music that scores whatever moment you're in.

Biography
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was born February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Ethiopian immigrant parents. His early life was marked by instability — his parents separated when he was young, and he was raised largely by his grandmother. He dropped out of high school and moved into a downtown Toronto apartment with friends, where he began making music in near-total secrecy.
His first three mixtapes (House of Balloons, Thursday, Echoes of Silence — collectively the Trilogy) were released anonymously in 2011 with no press, no features, no marketing. They spread entirely by word of mouth.
The Weeknd's sound is built on contradictions. His falsetto is angelic; the subject matter is often dark. The production is lush and synthetic; the emotions are raw and exposed.
He draws from 80s synth-pop, Michael Jackson's pop sensibility, Prince's sexuality, and hip-hop's rhythmic DNA. The result is a genre-defining blend — dark R&B, alternative pop, and cinematic soul — that's been widely imitated but never duplicated. His voice is one of the most recognizable in contemporary music.
After Hours (2020) confirmed his status as a generational talent. Blinding Lights, with its 80s synth-pop energy and perfect pop structure, became the best-performing song in Billboard Hot 100 history. His Super Bowl LV halftime show in 2021 drew 91.
6 million viewers — the largest audience in NFL halftime history. He has sold over 75 million albums worldwide and received 4 Grammy Awards, though he famously boycotted the Grammys in 2020 over what he called corrupt practices.
History
The Weeknd's anonymous Trilogy era (2011-2012) created genuine underground mythology. House of Balloons debuted on a blog and spread virally, earning a Polaris Music Prize nomination before most people knew who made it. The three mixtapes were later compiled and released commercially as Trilogy (2012), certified Platinum in multiple countries.
His proper debut Kiss Land (2013) debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, surprising an industry that had dismissed his chances of mainstream success.
Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) was the commercial breakthrough. Can't Feel My Face and The Hills topped charts worldwide, and the album reached No. 1 in multiple countries.
It won Grammys for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Performance. Earned It from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack won Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. Starboy (2016), his Daft Punk collaboration, debuted at No.
1 in 17 countries.
After Hours (2020) was his artistic and commercial peak to that point. Blinding Lights spent a then-record 57 consecutive weeks in the Hot 100 top 10, eventually extending its run to 90 weeks total. His Super Bowl performance in 2021 (entirely self-funded at $7 million) became one of the most discussed halftime shows in history.
Dawn FM (2022) was a concept album — a radio station for the afterlife — featuring Jim Carrey as narrator and Giorgio Moroder on production.
Hurry Up Tomorrow (2025), the final album under The Weeknd name, completed the After Hours trilogy. Abel Tesfaye announced it would be his last album as The Weeknd — a character he's retiring to pursue new artistic directions. The album debuted at No.
1 globally and featured collaborations with Lana Del Rey, Travis Scott, and Future.
Legacy & Influence
The Weeknd redefined what R&B could be. His influence is everywhere — in the dark pop explosion of the 2010s, in the atmospheric production style adopted by artists from Post Malone to SZA, in the willingness of pop stars to embrace genuinely dark subject matter. Blinding Lights alone earned him a permanent place in pop history as the best-performing Billboard Hot 100 song of all time.
The numbers tell one story: 75 million albums sold, 100 million monthly Spotify listeners, Super Bowl halftime show, four Grammy Awards, a star likely incoming on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But the real legacy is the sound. Kiss Land, After Hours, Dawn FM — these are albums built to last.
They don't sound like their era. They sound like The Weeknd, which is now a genre unto itself.
