Poolside music has a specific lineage. Balearic beat came out of Ibiza in the mid-1980s, when DJ Alfredo Fiorito at Amnesia mixed Spanish pop with new wave and early house for a crowd that had been outside since sunset. British clubbers took it home in 1987 and it became the blueprint for the summer anthem: mid-tempo, sunlit, genre-agnostic.

Two decades later Kygo, Klingande and Thomas Jack slowed that idea down and swapped synths for flutes, steel drums and saxophones — the press called it tropical house around 2013, and by the summer of 2015 it owned the charts. Meanwhile Latin pop was doing the same work from a different direction. Ricky Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca crossed over in 1999, Shakira's Hips Don't Lie in 2006, and Despacito in 2017, which became the first mostly-Spanish-language song to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Macarena two decades earlier.

Afrobeats completed the picture: Master KG's Jerusalema spread through 2020 as a dance video before most of the world knew the artist's name.

The pool party playlist outlived the genres that built it. Tropical house faded as a chart force after 2017, but its production habits stayed — the soft drop, the acoustic lead instrument, the refusal to go hard — and they are now the default sound of any brand that wants to say summer without saying anything else. Afrobeats picked up the same job in the 2020s: Wizkid's Essence and Jerusalema both spread the way Balearic records once did, by being played outdoors somewhere warm until everybody learned them.

What has not changed in forty years is the requirement. A poolside record has to survive being heard badly — through a cheap speaker, over water, half a conversation away — and still make somebody stand up. Very few genres are engineered for that, which is why the same handful keep getting used.

The tell is what happens when you play these records indoors in February: Jubel and Piece Of Your Heart shrink, because half of what makes them work is the space they were built to fill. That is not a criticism of the music. Writing for a specific room — or for the deliberate absence of one — is a real craft, and it explains why a playlist assembled for a garden in July does something no general-purpose chart mix manages.

The other durable lesson is about sequencing. A pool party is not a club night with sunshine; it has arrivals, a long flat middle where nothing much happens, and a slow fade rather than a peak. Any playlist that ignores that shape ends up either too aggressive at four in the afternoon or too limp at eight in the evening, which is the single most common mistake people make when they build one themselves.
