Biography
Drummer Stewart Copeland formed The Police in London in 1977. Bassist and singer Sting joined, and guitarist Andy Summers completed the line-up later that year.
They stopped working together in 1984, reunited for a world tour in 2007 and 2008, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
History
Outlandos d'Amour came out in 1978 with Roxanne and Can't Stand Losing You. Reggatta de Blanc in 1979 had Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon, both UK number ones. Zenyattà Mondatta in 1980 had Don't Stand So Close to Me and De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.
Ghost in the Machine in 1981 added horns and keyboards, with Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic. Synchronicity, released in June 1983, spent seventeen weeks at number one in the US, and Every Breath You Take was the biggest song of the year.
Legacy & Influence
The Police showed that a punk-era band could play reggae and jazz with real skill and still top the charts. Every Breath You Take is one of the most played songs in radio history.
