Biography
Mark Knopfler, his brother David, John Illsley and Pick Withers formed Dire Straits in London in 1977. A demo of Sultans of Swing played on BBC Radio London got them a deal with Vertigo.
They split in 1995, and Mark Knopfler went on to a long solo career and many film scores. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
History
Dire Straits came out in 1978, and Sultans of Swing became a hit in 1979. Communiqué followed in 1979 and Making Movies in 1980, with Romeo and Juliet and Tunnel of Love. Love Over Gold in 1982 had Telegraph Road and Private Investigations.
Brothers in Arms, released in May 1985, was one of the first albums recorded fully digitally and became one of the best-selling albums ever, with Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, So Far Away and Brothers in Arms. On Every Street in 1991 was their last album.
Legacy & Influence
Mark Knopfler's guitar tone, played with his fingers instead of a pick, is among the most recognisable in rock, and Brothers in Arms helped make the CD the standard format of the eighties.
