U2

U2 are the biggest rock band in the world, and have been for thirty years. The Joshua Tree (1987) is the most-played rock album of the 80s. Achtung Baby (1991) reinvented them from earnest Irish rockers into ironic post-modern giants. One is the most-covered song of the last 40 years. With or Without You is the sound of 80s arena rock at its peak. Bono is a rock missionary, The Edge invented a new way of playing guitar, and Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. have held the rhythm section since 1976 without a single lineup change.

Biography

U2 formed in Dublin in 1976 after drummer Larry Mullen Jr. posted a notice on his school bulletin board looking for musicians. Adam Clayton, Paul "Bono" Hewson, and David "The Edge" Evans showed up.

They were all 14-15 years old. Forty-eight years later, it's the same four people.

Boy (1980) and October (1981) established them as Irish post-punk hopefuls. War (1983) made them political with "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day." The Unforgettable Fire (1984) introduced the atmospheric Brian Eno production style.

Then came The Joshua Tree (1987) — the album that made them the biggest band in the world, 25 million copies sold.

Achtung Baby (1991) was the reinvention. Recorded in Berlin after the Wall came down, produced with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, it threw out the Joshua Tree earnestness and embraced industrial beats, distortion, and irony. The Zoo TV tour (1992-93) was the most ambitious stadium production of the 90s.

They've been innovating every album since.

History

The Joshua Tree (March 1987) is the arena rock masterpiece. "Where the Streets Have No Name" opens with The Edge's shimmering delay pedal and Bono's soaring vocal. "With or Without You" is the most played rock song of the 80s.

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is the gospel-tinged spiritual crisis anthem. "Running to Stand Still" is about heroin addiction in Dublin. 25 million copies sold.

Album of the Year Grammy 1988.

Achtung Baby (November 1991) is the ironic reinvention. "One" is one of the greatest songs ever written — a meditation on love and division that millions interpret differently. "Mysterious Ways.

" "The Fly." "Until the End of the World." Industrial beats, distorted guitars, Bono singing through a fake character called The Fly.

The band saved themselves from becoming a self-parody.

All That You Can't Leave Behind (October 2000) was the pop comeback. "Beautiful Day" won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. "Walk On" was the 9/11 anthem.

"Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" was written for Michael Hutchence. The album reset U2 as adult contemporary rock royalty.

Songs of Innocence (2014) became famous for the wrong reason — Apple auto-downloaded it to every iTunes account in the world. Songs of Experience (2017) was the intended sequel. Songs of Surrender (2023) is 40 acoustic re-recordings of their catalog.

Legacy & Influence

The Edge invented a new way to play guitar. His delay-heavy, arpeggiated, atmospheric style is the sound of 80s and 90s rock guitar. Every band after 1987 that wanted to sound "atmospheric" referenced The Edge.

Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Interpol — the entire post-punk revival of the 2000s traces back to The Joshua Tree.

Bono became the most famous rock activist of his generation — DATA, RED, (PRODUCT) RED, ONE Campaign. He's met more heads of state than most diplomats. The band has pledged over $100 million to AIDS relief and African debt forgiveness.

They are the only major rock band whose political activism is taken seriously by actual politicians.

22 Grammy Awards — more than any other rock band in history. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2005 (first-ballot). 175 million records sold worldwide.

The Zoo TV tour (1992-93), PopMart (1997), and the 360° tour (2009-11) are the three highest-grossing tours of their respective eras. Four decades, same four members.

Can I listen to U2 free on Mixtuby?

Yes — 15 U2 studio albums are available free on Mixtuby with no account needed. 200+ tracks from Boy (1980) to Songs of Surrender (2023), covering every era — post-punk beginnings, arena rock peak, industrial reinvention, and pop comeback. Press play and it starts.

What is U2's best album?

The Joshua Tree (1987) is widely considered U2's masterpiece — 25 million copies sold, Grammy Album of the Year, and home to With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name, and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. Achtung Baby (1991) is the bold reinvention. All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) is the pop comeback. Start with The Joshua Tree.

Are U2 still together?

Yes — U2 are still together with the same lineup since 1976. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. have never had a lineup change in 48 years. Larry Mullen Jr. took a break for back surgery during the 2023 Las Vegas Sphere residency, but the band remains officially intact.

Is U2 good for studying?

U2's atmospheric tracks work well for focused work — Where the Streets Have No Name, MLK, and the Brian Eno-produced ambient tracks on The Unforgettable Fire and No Line on the Horizon. Avoid the arena rock anthems (Vertigo, Elevation) for intensive focus — they demand attention. Songs of Surrender's acoustic versions are excellent background music.

How many albums did U2 release?

U2 released 15 studio albums between 1980 and 2023 — Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop, All That You Can't Leave Behind, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, No Line on the Horizon, Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, and Songs of Surrender. All 15 are streamable on Mixtuby.
