Dr. Dre made only three solo albums in twenty-three years, and two of them changed how hip-hop sounded. The Chronic invented G-funk, 2001 defined West Coast rap at the turn of the century, and Compton closed the story. 51 songs here, with Still D.R.E., The Next Episode and Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang.

Biography

Andre Romelle Young was born on February 18, 1965, in Compton, California. He started as a DJ with the World Class Wreckin' Cru, co-founded N.W.

A in 1987, and in 1991 started Death Row Records with Suge Knight.

He later founded Aftermath Entertainment, signed Eminem, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar, and co-founded Beats Electronics, sold to Apple in 2014.

History

The Chronic came out in December 1992, built on slow funk samples and synthesizer leads, with Snoop Dogg on almost every song. Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang and Let Me Ride were the hits.

2001, released in November 1999, had Still D.R.E.

and The Next Episode with Snoop Dogg, and Forgot About Dre with Eminem. Compton, released in August 2015 alongside the film Straight Outta Compton, brought in Kendrick Lamar and Anderson .Paak.

Legacy & Influence

Dr. Dre is more famous as a producer than as a rapper. His sound on The Chronic and 2001 became the template for West Coast rap, and the artists he signed shaped the next twenty years of hip-hop.
