Biography
Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in East Harlem, New York City. Raised by his mother Afeni Shakur, a Black Panther activist, he moved to Baltimore and then Marin City, California. He began his music career as a roadie and dancer for Digital Underground before launching his solo career in 1991. 2Pac's musical style was revolutionary — he combined hardcore West Coast rap with deeply personal storytelling, social commentary, and emotional vulnerability rarely seen in hip-hop. His ability to shift from aggressive street anthems to tender, reflective ballads within a single album set him apart from his contemporaries. With over 75 million records sold worldwide, 2Pac is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. All Eyez on Me was certified Diamond (10 million+ copies). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, his first year of eligibility.
History
2Pac's debut album 2Pacalypse Now (1991) immediately courted controversy with its unflinching portrayal of police brutality and urban poverty. Brenda's Got a Baby and Trapped announced a powerful new voice in hip-hop. Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z... (1993) expanded his reach with hits like I Get Around and Keep Ya Head Up. Me Against the World (1995) debuted at #1 while 2Pac was in prison — a first in music history. Dear Mama became his signature song, and the album is widely considered one of the greatest rap albums ever made. Its introspective, personal tone showed Tupac at his most vulnerable and poetic. All Eyez on Me (1996), released on Death Row Records, was hip-hop's first double album. California Love (featuring Dr. Dre) became a worldwide phenomenon, while How Do U Want It, Ambitionz Az a Ridah, and 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted dominated radio and MTV. The album sold over 10 million copies in the US alone. On September 7, 1996, 2Pac was shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. He died six days later on September 13, at just 25 years old. His death, along with The Notorious B.I.G.'s murder six months later, marked the tragic climax of the East Coast-West Coast rivalry.
Legacy & Influence
2Pac's legacy transcends music. He was a poet, actor, and activist whose work addressed racism, poverty, and inequality with an urgency that remains relevant today. His ability to be simultaneously tough and tender, political and personal, made him hip-hop's most complex and compelling figure. His influence is heard in virtually every rapper who followed — from Eminem and 50 Cent to Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. Dear Mama was among the first hip-hop recordings added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. His poetry, published posthumously, has been studied in universities worldwide. Despite recording only four studio albums in his lifetime, 2Pac's impact on hip-hop and popular culture is matched by few artists in any genre. He remains the gold standard against which all rappers are measured — the definitive voice of a generation.
