Biography

Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known as Eminem, was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Raised in poverty by a single mother, he found escape in hip-hop, battling at local rap competitions and gaining recognition on the underground scene. Dr. Dre discovered him after hearing The Slim Shady EP and signed him to Aftermath Entertainment in 1998. Eminem's style is defined by his extraordinary technical ability — complex rhyme schemes, lightning-fast delivery, and multiple personas (Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers, Eminem). He holds the Guinness World Record for fastest rap in a hit single with Rap God (1,560 words in 6:04) and broke it again with Godzilla (10.65 syllables per second). His ability to blend dark humor, personal pain, and social commentary is unmatched. With over 220 million records sold worldwide, Eminem is the best-selling hip-hop artist and one of the best-selling music artists ever. He has won 15 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Lose Yourself, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Rolling Stone named him the King of Hip-Hop.

History

Eminem exploded onto the mainstream in 1999 with The Slim Shady LP, winning the Grammy for Best Rap Album. The follow-up, The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), became one of the fastest-selling albums in history, moving 1.76 million copies in its first week. The Eminem Show (2002) was the best-selling album of the year worldwide. Encore (2004) continued his commercial dominance. After a four-year hiatus battling addiction, Eminem returned with Relapse (2009) and Recovery (2010). Recovery's Love the Way You Lie with Rihanna became a global phenomenon, and Not Afraid cemented his comeback. The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013) won the Grammy for Best Rap Album, with Rap God becoming a viral sensation. Revival (2017) divided fans, but Kamikaze (2018) — a surprise release responding to critics — was praised for its return to aggressive, technical rap. Music to Be Murdered By (2020) featured the record-breaking Godzilla with Juice WRLD. In 2024, The Death of Slim Shady brought Eminem full circle, conceptually killing off his iconic alter ego.

Legacy & Influence

Eminem's impact on music and culture is immeasurable. He broke racial barriers in hip-hop, becoming the first white rapper to achieve widespread critical and commercial acceptance. He opened doors for artists like Machine Gun Kelly, Jack Harlow, and countless others, proving that authenticity matters more than background. Commercially, his numbers are staggering: over 220 million records sold, 15 Grammy Awards, 10 consecutive No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Lose Yourself remains the most iconic rap song in film history. His influence extends to technical rap — his complex rhyme schemes and delivery have been studied and imitated by every generation of rappers since. In 2022, Eminem was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. His cultural impact extends far beyond music — from 8 Mile to his mentorship of artists through Shady Records, Marshall Mathers has shaped hip-hop more profoundly than perhaps any other artist of his generation.
