Independent music grew out of the post-punk DIY movement of the late 1970s, when labels like Rough Trade (1978), Factory Records (1978), and SST Records (1978) refused the major-label playbook and pressed records on shoestring budgets. The 1980s alternative rock explosion gave the scene its sound — R.E.

M., The Smiths, The Cure, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü — and college radio became its distribution network. Nirvana's leap from Sub Pop to a Geffen contract in 1991 proved indie aesthetics could top global charts without surrendering authenticity, and the post-grunge decade produced bands like Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Belle & Sebastian.

Pitchfork Media (founded 1996) became the cultural arbiter, and the 2000s internet era democratized everything else: MP3 blogs, MySpace, then Bandcamp turned bedroom artists into international touring acts. Bon Iver's For Emma (2008) was recorded in a Wisconsin cabin and ended up at the Grammys. Arctic Monkeys built their fanbase on file-sharing forums before releasing the fastest-selling debut in UK history.

Indie permanently rewrote the rules of the music business. It proved that artistic authenticity and commercial success can coexist without a major label, and it forced the entire industry to take direct artist-fan relationships seriously. Distribution platforms like Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and DistroKid grew directly out of indie-scene needs, and the template now defines how a generation of artists release music — from Phoebe Bridgers and Mitski to Boygenius and Black Country, New Road.

The aesthetic also shaped film soundtracks (The Royal Tenenbaums, Garden State, 500 Days of Summer) and gave indie a permanent footprint in mainstream visual culture.
