Biography
Katy Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, to two Pentecostal pastors. She grew up mostly on gospel music, because secular music was discouraged at home.
At 16 she released a gospel album, Katy Hudson, in 2001, under her birth name. It did not sell, and it is not part of this page. She later took her mother's maiden name, Perry, and signed with Capitol Records, where her first single, I Kissed a Girl, came out in April 2008.
Perry is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with more than 151 million records sold. She headlined the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show in February 2015 and was a judge on American Idol from 2018 to 2024.
History
One of the Boys came out on June 17, 2008. I Kissed a Girl went to number one in the US, and Hot n Cold, Thinking of You and Waking Up in Vegas followed it onto the radio.
Teenage Dream, released on August 24, 2010, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. It became the only album by a woman to produce five number one singles in the US: California Gurls with Snoop Dogg, Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T.
and Last Friday Night (T.G.I.
F.). A 2012 reissue added Part of Me, another number one, and Wide Awake, which reached number two.

PRISM followed on October 18, 2013, and also debuted at number one. Roar and Dark Horse both went to number one in the US, and Birthday, Unconditionally and This Is How We Do were singles too. Witness, on June 9, 2017, made it three number one albums in a row, led by Chained to the Rhythm with Skip Marley.
Rise, recorded in 2016 for the Olympics coverage on NBC, is a separate single and sits in the Greatest Hits playlist.
Smile came out on August 28, 2020, led by Daisies, with Never Really Over from 2019 opening the record. It debuted at number five. 143, released on September 20, 2024, was her seventh studio album counting Katy Hudson and her sixth as Katy Perry.
Woman's World, Lifetimes and I'm His, He's Mine were the singles, and the album debuted at number six in the US.
