Why It Works

Her catalogue covers most moods. Like a Virgin and True Blue are bright eighties pop for a drive or a kitchen dance. Confessions on a Dance Floor is one continuous club mix, good for a workout or a party. Ray of Light is the one for headphones and a late walk, and Bedtime Stories is slow, warm R&B for the evening.

Why Mixtuby

Mixtuby plays every Madonna studio album in order, one song into the next, so Confessions on a Dance Floor still runs like a DJ set from Hung Up to Like It or Not. On YouTube you get one video and then autoplay takes you somewhere else. Here you pick an album, or the Greatest Hits playlist if you just want the singles, including Vogue and Into the Groove. Biography

Madonna Louise Ciccone was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan, and grew up near Detroit. She studied dance at the University of Michigan, left for New York in 1978 with very little money, and worked as a dancer and drummer before turning to songwriting and the downtown club scene.

Sire Records signed her in 1982 on the strength of the single Everybody. Her first album, Madonna, came out in July 1983, and Holiday became her first hit in the US.

She is the best-selling female recording artist of all time according to Guinness World Records, with sales estimated at more than 300 million records, and she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

History

Like a Virgin, released in November 1984 and produced by Nile Rodgers, made her a star. The title track spent six weeks at number one in the US, and Material Girl gave her an image she spent years playing with. True Blue followed in 1986 with Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, Live to Tell and La Isla Bonita.

Like a Prayer, released in March 1989, was more personal, with songs about her family and her faith, and the title track with its gospel choir is still one of her best-known recordings. Erotica in 1992 and Bedtime Stories in 1994 turned toward house and R&B; Take a Bow from Bedtime Stories spent seven weeks at number one in the US.

Ray of Light, made with William Orbit and released in March 1998, brought electronica and trip-hop into her sound and won four Grammy Awards. Music followed in 2000, produced largely with Mirwais, and its title track was another US number one. After the darker American Life in 2003, Confessions on a Dance Floor in 2005 went straight back to the club.

Hung Up, built on a sample of ABBA's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!

, reached number one in more than forty countries.

Hard Candy in 2008 brought in Timbaland, Pharrell and Justin Timberlake, with 4 Minutes as the lead single. MDNA came out in 2012, Rebel Heart in 2015 and Madame X, recorded partly in Lisbon, in 2019. Confessions II arrived in 2026, a return to the dance floor twenty years after the first Confessions.

Vogue, Into the Groove, Crazy for You and Justify My Love were released outside her studio albums, so they are in the Greatest Hits playlist rather than the album playlists.

Legacy & Influence

Madonna's real skill was choosing collaborators at the right moment. Nile Rodgers in 1984, Patrick Leonard on Like a Prayer, William Orbit on Ray of Light, Mirwais on Music, Stuart Price on Confessions. Each album sounds like the dance music of its year, and each one carried that sound to a much larger audience.

She also kept control of the whole picture, the music, the videos and the tours, long before that was normal for a pop singer. Almost every female pop star who came after her, from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga, has been compared with her at some point.
