Phonk Music Player

Phonk is a subgenre of hip-hop that originated in the early 2010s, drawing heavily from 1990s Memphis rap (Three 6 Mafia, DJ Screw, Gangsta Pat) and chopped and screwed aesthetics. Early phonk producers like MEMPHIS 666, Soudiere, and DJ Yung Vamp pioneered the genre's characteristic sound: slow, hazy beats, heavy 808s, vocal samples from obscure 90s Memphis tapes, and dark, hypnotic atmospheres. The genre was largely underground until 2018-2019, when it gained traction on SoundCloud and later TikTok.

The drift phonk subgenre exploded in 2021-2022, driven by its association with car drift videos on TikTok — tracks like Kordhell's Murder in My Mind accumulated over 500 million streams. By 2023, phonk had become one of the fastest-growing genres on Spotify globally.

Phonk music demonstrates the power of niche internet communities to revive and transform regional music histories. Its rescue of obscure 1990s Memphis rap tapes from obscurity has sparked archival interest in underground rap history. The genre's TikTok virality established the template for how micro-genres can achieve mainstream streaming success through short-form video platform adoption.
