Space Shooter with Music
Shooter is three arcade games that play over your music. In Invaders you fly a small amber gunship over a glowing Earth while waves of alien bats, bugs and saucers march down in blocks, hearts, diamonds and diving swarms, with a boss mothership every eighth wave. In Lyric Hunt the words of the line being sung drop as pods and you shoot them in the order they are sung. In Quiz there is no shooting at all; you guess the missing word of the next line before the singer gets there. Free, no download, and it runs on a phone or a computer.

Set the tempo, if you like
In Invaders the aliens move to a tempo from 60 to 160 beats a minute. Drag it, or tap the tempo button four times along with the song.

Tap an alien and the ship swings round and fires. On a computer, steer with the arrow keys or WASD, fire with E and launch the special missile with Q.

A boss every eighth wave

A big armoured mothership that takes many hits and fires volleys of bombs. Each one comes back stronger.
Your guns grow
After bosses and bonus stages
From one cannon to two, then three, then three with a laser. A special missile recharges every ten seconds.
Four hits and you're out
Invaders
Bombs fall from the invaders. The ship survives three; the fourth ends the game. Every 90 kills a Mixtuby logo falls slowly, and catching it heals you.

Lyric Hunt drops the words of each line for you to shoot in sung order. Quiz blanks a word from the next line for you to guess before it is sung.
Why a Lyrics Quiz Sharpens Listening
Guessing the next word of a song before you hear it is a small version of what listening researchers call prediction: as we listen, the brain is always guessing what comes next and checking the guess against what arrives. Language learners are often told to sing along for the same reason; matching words to a melody slows them down and makes each one easier to catch and remember.
Quiz and Lyric Hunt turn that into a game. Quiz asks you to predict a word, then the song tells you if you were right. Lyric Hunt asks you to put the words in the order they were sung. Neither is a language course, but both make you listen more closely than you would with the song in the background.
One honest note on Invaders: the aliens do not hear the music. A browser cannot read the sound of a YouTube video, so they march to a tempo you set, or tap in, which is why it feels in time.

Space Shooter with Music — FAQ
Do the aliens move to the beat of the song?
They move to a tempo. Each battle playlist comes with a tempo that suits it, and you can drag it from 60 to 160 beats a minute or tap it in. The game can't hear the song itself; browsers don't allow reading the sound of a YouTube video.
Can I play on a phone?
Yes. Tap an alien and the ship turns and fires at it, or use the on-screen stick. You can switch on auto-fire and a left-handed layout.
What are the keyboard controls?
Arrow keys or WASD steer, E fires straight up, Q launches the special missile and Esc leaves the game. Space is left for play and pause.
Which songs work in Lyric Hunt and Quiz?
The Pop & Hits, Rock Lyrics and Latin Hits lists. The lyrics come from LRCLIB, a free community lyrics database, and we checked these songs so they stay in time with the music.
Is there a leaderboard?
Yes, one for each game. Your score goes on it when you are signed in and have picked a handle. Without an account you can still play every game.
Is it free? Does it collect anything?
Free. Your settings are remembered in this browser and sync with your Mixtuby settings if you are signed in. Scores are saved only for signed-in players, with the handle and country they chose.
