Sabrina Carpenter — From Eyes Wide Open to Manchild, Every Album

Sabrina Carpenter was born on May 11, 1999, and grew up in Quakertown, a small town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. A lot of people first met her as Maya Hart on the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World, and for years that was the label that followed her around: the Disney kid who also sings. She put out her first EP, Can't Blame a Girl for Trying, in 2014, while the show was still on the air.

The music started out as folk-pop with an acoustic guitar never far away, then moved through glossy dance-pop on the Singular albums, then into the sharp, witty, slightly retro sound she is known for now. Her voice is light and bright, and she uses it like a comedian uses timing. A lot of her best lines land on the last beat of the bar, half-sung, like a joke she is not sure you caught.

The payoff came late and all at once. Espresso topped the charts in more than 20 countries in 2024, Please Please Please gave her a first number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and Short n' Sweet debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. At the 2025 Grammys she had six nominations, including Album of the Year, and won two: Best Pop Vocal Album for Short n' Sweet and Best Pop Solo Performance for Espresso.

Eyes Wide Open came out in April 2015 on Hollywood Records. It folded in all four songs from the debut EP, Can't Blame a Girl for Trying among them, and it sounds exactly like a teenager with a guitar and a lot of feelings, which is what it was. We'll Be the Stars and the title track were the singles.

EVOLution followed in 2016 with Thumbs and On Purpose, a bit more pop, a bit more sure of itself.

Then came the Singular idea. She planned it as one album and split it in two because the songs pulled in different directions. Singular: Act I arrived in November 2018 with Almost Love and Sue Me; Singular: Act II followed in July 2019 with In My Bed and Exhale, and it was her last release on Hollywood Records.

If you only know the recent Sabrina, Act II is the bridge: you can hear the humour creeping in.

In July 2022 she moved to Island Records and released emails i can't send, the album where everything clicked. It is written like a stack of unsent messages, honest and petty and very funny, and it holds Nonsense, Because I Liked a Boy and Vicious. Nonsense turned into a live event of its own.

When she opened for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour in Latin America, Singapore and Australia, she made up a new outro for it at almost every show, often a rhyme about the city she was in.

Espresso dropped in April 2024 and she sang it at Coachella the next day. Please Please Please followed, and Short n' Sweet landed in August with 362,000 units in its first US week. Twelve tracks, Taste to Don't Smile, and barely a wasted minute.

A year later came Man's Best Friend, released on August 29, 2025. Its lead single Manchild debuted at number one in the US and the UK, and the album keeps the same trick going: twelve songs about men who disappoint, sung by someone who finds them more funny than tragic.

Sabrina Carpenter made being funny in a pop song feel like a strength again. For a while the big pop records were either huge ballads or cool and detached. She brought back the wink: the double meaning in the chorus, the line you only get on the third listen.

A lot of young pop acts since 2024 have tried the same thing, with mixed results, because timing is hard to copy.

Her story is also a useful reminder that a career can take the long road. Four albums on a Disney-adjacent label, a label change, years of opening slots, and only then the hits.
