Dua Lipa — From New Rules to Houdini, Every Album

Dua Lipa was born in London in 1995 to parents from Kosovo, and the family moved back to Pristina when she was a kid. At fifteen she went back to London on her own to chase music — school during the week, covers posted online, modelling and waitressing to pay for it. That is the short version of why her records sound so certain of themselves.

She had already bet on this before anyone signed her.

The sound she settled on is pop you can dance to without being told to dance. Her voice sits low for a pop singer, a smoky alto that makes even the bright songs feel a little cooler than they should. The debut leaned dark and tropical; Future Nostalgia went straight for disco strings, slap bass and the kind of chorus a whole room shouts back.

Radical Optimism softened the edges, with Kevin Parker of Tame Impala among the producers and a lot more sunshine in the mix.

The awards arrived fast. At the 2018 Brit Awards she won British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. A year later she took Best New Artist at the Grammys, and Future Nostalgia later won Best Pop Vocal Album.

Not bad for someone whose first album came out in 2017.

The self-titled debut came out in 2017 on Warner. The version here is the 17-track deluxe layout, which matters, because the deluxe adds Last Dance, New Love, Room for 2, Dreams and Bad Together to the original twelve. The album took a while to catch fire.

Be the One had done well across Europe, but New Rules was the one that broke it open — a checklist for not calling your ex, set to a tropical drop, and it went to number one in the UK. Suddenly the rest of the record, Hotter Than Hell, Garden, Genesis, sounded like the start of a career instead of a debut.

Future Nostalgia landed in March 2020, just as much of the world went into lockdown. That timing gave it a strange double life: a record built for packed clubs became the soundtrack to people dancing alone in their kitchens. Don't Start Now had already been out since late 2019 and set the tone — the bass line alone is worth the play.

Physical borrowed an eighties workout-video energy, Break My Heart nodded to INXS, and Levitating slowly turned into the biggest song on the record. Eleven tracks, and not one you skip.

Four years later came Radical Optimism, in 2024. Houdini had arrived first, at the end of 2023, followed by Training Season, and both made it clear this was a looser, warmer Dua Lipa. The album is eleven songs again.

End of an Era opens it with a crush that might go nowhere and that is fine; These Walls is the most grown-up breakup song she has written; Happy for You closes on the hardest thing to say to an ex — and actually mean. It is the lightest of the three and it is meant to be.

Dua Lipa's biggest effect on pop was making disco feel current again without irony. Future Nostalgia came out a few months after The Weeknd's Blinding Lights era started, and between them they pulled mainstream radio back toward live bass, big string stabs and songs you could actually move to. For a few years after 2020, it seemed like every second new single had a funk guitar in it.

That was not an accident.

The other thing she proved is that three albums can be enough to cover a whole arc. The debut is the hungry one, Future Nostalgia is the confident one, Radical Optimism is the relaxed one. Played in order, all thirty-nine tracks, you hear somebody go from pleading for a hit to not needing one, which is a better story than most catalogues twice the size manage to tell.
