Falling Blocks with Music

Open Dropbeat — Free

Dropbeat is a falling-blocks puzzle that keeps time with your music. Pick one of six vibes, from slow Ambient to fast Rock; the vibe starts its playlist, paints the board in its colour and sets the tempo, and the blocks fall one row on every beat of that tempo. Slide them, turn them, drop them, and fill a whole row to clear it. When the blocks reach the top you see your score, and a couple of seconds later a fresh board starts on its own. Our own block shapes, our own board, free, no download.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Open Dropbeat

Tap the button on this page. Mixtuby opens in Vibe Mode with Dropbeat ready.

  2. 2

    Pick a vibe

Ambient, Lo-Fi, Hip-Hop, Pop, Electro or Rock. Calm vibes fall slowly, Rock falls fast.

  3. 3

    Tap Drop the beat

The music starts and the first block falls, one row on every beat.

  4. 4

    Move, turn and drop

On a computer, left and right arrows slide the block, up turns it, down drops it. On a phone, the four buttons under the board do the same.

  5. 5

    Fill rows to clear them

A full row disappears with a little chord. Clear two or three at once for a much bigger score.

What Happens on the Board

One row per beat

70–144 beats a minute

Ambient 70, Lo-Fi 82, Hip-Hop 92, Pop 112, Electro 128 and Rock 144. The falling block glows softly on every beat.

Seven shapes of our own

Every block

A dot, two straight beams, a square, a corner, a hook and an arch, so some turns are easy and some are not.

Rows clear with a chord

On every full row

One row is 10 points, two at once 40, three at once 90. The notes climb a scale as you clear more at a time.

The board fits your screen

Any device

Ten columns across the full width, and between 10 and 22 rows depending on how tall the screen is.

A soft game over

When it fills up

Your score shows for a moment, then the board clears and a new round starts by itself, with the music still playing.

Why Falling-Block Puzzles Feel So Calming

Puzzles like this one have been studied more than you might think. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that playing a falling-blocks game soon after watching distressing film footage reduced the intrusive memories people had of it afterwards; the idea is that the game keeps the brain's visual "workspace" busy. Others have studied how absorbing these puzzles are: they have a clear goal, instant feedback and difficulty that rises with you, which is what psychologists describe as the conditions for flow, the state of being fully absorbed in what you are doing.

Dropbeat adds music on top, and the music sets the speed. Slow vibes keep the game calm, fast ones make it a sprint.

The research used other games, not Dropbeat, and short sessions. Play it because it feels good, not as a treatment.

When you are listening to music anyway and want a quiet game that keeps time with it.

Falling Blocks with Music — FAQ

Do the blocks follow the beat of the song?

They follow the tempo of the vibe you picked, one row per beat. The game can't hear the song itself, since browsers don't allow reading the sound of a YouTube video, so each vibe uses a tempo that suits its playlist.

Is this Tetris?

No. Dropbeat has its own board, its own seven shapes (including a single dot and straight beams of two and three) and its own colours. It is a falling-blocks puzzle, like many others.

What are the controls?

Left and right arrows move the block, up turns it, down drops it to the bottom, Esc leaves the game. On a phone, use the four buttons under the board.

What happens when I lose?

Your score shows for a couple of seconds, then the board clears and a new round starts on its own. The music never stops.

Can I turn off the sounds?

Yes, in the gear menu. The game's own sounds are on by default; your music plays either way.

Is it free? Does it collect anything?

Free, no account, no leaderboard. Your vibe and sound choice are remembered in this browser and sync with your Mixtuby settings if you are signed in.
