Bedside Clock with Sleep Timer

Open the Bedside Clock — Free

Nightstand turns your phone into a dim bedside clock. Big amber digits on black, the date underneath, a slider to make it as dark as you like, and a sleep timer that plays your music for 15, 45 or 90 minutes, fades it out and then lets the phone go to sleep on its own. Taps on the black do nothing at all, so the phone can lie on the pillow or the bedside table without anything changing by accident. To leave, you slide; to reach the music, you pull up firmly. Free, no app, no account.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Open Nightstand

Tap the button on this page, or the clock shortcut next to Your Mood on Mixtuby's home screen.

  2. 2

    Start your sleep music

Any playlist, a rain sound, or the music you already have on. It keeps playing.

  3. 3

    Pick a timer

15, 45 or 90 minutes, or Off. The last choice is remembered for next time.

  4. 4

Make it as dim as you like

Slide the brightness down to as little as a tenth. It never goes fully black, so it is always a clock.

  5. 5

Put the phone down, on the charger

The screen stays on all night. When the timer ends the music fades out and the phone is free to fall asleep by itself.

How It Behaves at Night

Taps do nothing

All night

Only the timer buttons and the "slide to exit" knob react. A cheek, a hand or a blanket on the screen changes nothing.

The clock speaks your phone's language

Always

24-hour or AM/PM and the date in the language your phone is set to.

The music fades and stops

When the timer ends

The timer counts down under the clock. At zero the music fades out, and Nightstand stops holding the screen on.

The player is one firm pull away

When you want it

Pull up against the resistance for half the screen to reach the music. A phone in a pocket never gets there by itself.

Full screen

Double-tap

Where the browser allows it, a double-tap on the black hides everything else. On iPhone, add Mixtuby to the Home Screen for the same effect.

Why a Dim, Untouchable Clock Helps You Sleep

Two things about phones at night make sleep harder, and Nightstand is built against both. The first is light: bright screens late in the evening make it harder to feel sleepy, which is why the clock starts dim, can go down to a tenth of its brightness, and is amber on black rather than white.

The second is interaction. Each time you pick up the phone to check something, you are more awake than before. On Nightstand there is nothing to check: no notifications, no feed, and the black does not react to taps at all.

Sleep doctors also say that watching the clock can make insomnia worse when you are anxious about the time. If that is you, turn the brightness right down, set the timer and turn the phone face down. The music will stop by itself.

Real Moments to Use It

Falling asleep to rain

Rain sounds on, 45 minutes, brightness at 20 percent. The room goes dark when you do.

45 min · Rain

A hotel room with no clock

The phone on the charger becomes the clock on the bedside table, and plays the music you sleep to at home.

90 min · Sleep

Putting a child to bed

Lullabies for fifteen minutes and a soft clock the child can't change by tapping.

15 min · Baby

A phone on the pillow

Podcast-style music by your ear with no risk of skipping, pausing or calling someone in your sleep.

45 min · Meditation

Waking in the night

A glance at the dim clock tells you the time without lighting up the room.

Timer off · 10 % brightness

An old phone as a bedside clock

The phone you no longer use, on a stand, on the charger, every night.

90 min · Sleep

A clock that won't wake you, music that stops by itself

No app, no account. Keep the phone on the charger; the screen stays on.

Bedside Clock with Sleep Timer — FAQ

Will the screen stay on all night?

Yes, while Nightstand is open the phone is asked to keep the screen on, so keep it on the charger. When the sleep timer ends, it lets go and the phone locks itself as usual.

What happens if I touch the screen in my sleep?

Nothing. Only the timer buttons and the "slide to exit" knob react to a tap.

How do I get to the music?

Pull up firmly from the clock, about half the screen. Keyboard users can press the up arrow or Page Down.

Which timer lengths are there?

15, 45 and 90 minutes, or Off. It uses the same sleep timer as the rest of Mixtuby, so a timer you set elsewhere keeps running.

Can I make it darker?

Down to a tenth of full brightness. It never goes completely black, so you can always see the time.

Is it free? Does it collect anything?

Free, no account. Your timer and brightness are remembered in this browser. If you accepted analytics cookies, we count that Nightstand was opened and with which timer.
