Book Reader is coming to Mixtuby. Open a book you already have on your phone or computer — a PDF, an EPUB, a Word file, a comic or an audiobook — and read it with music playing underneath. Turn pages with a tap, pinch to zoom into a scanned page, search for a word, and pick the page colour that suits the hour, from white and paper to sepia, black, amber and a red night page that keeps your eyes used to the dark. The book stays on your device. It is never uploaded to us, and we never see its title or its text.

Why Reading with Music, and Why a Red Page at Night
Whether music helps you read depends on the music. Studies of background music and reading generally find that music with lyrics competes with the words on the page, while calm instrumental music is less distracting and can make a long reading session more pleasant. That is why the music shelves we suggest for reading are mostly instrumental.
The page colour matters at night. Our eyes adapt to the dark slowly, and bright white light undoes it in moments. Astronomers and pilots have long used dim red light because it disturbs that adaptation least. A red page is not a sleep aid, but it is the gentlest way to read when the lights are already off.
And the privacy part is simple: because the book never leaves your device, there is nothing about what you read for anyone to collect.

When will Book Reader be available?
It is being finished now. Until it opens, the button on this page plays music for reading.
Are my books uploaded anywhere?
No. The book is kept on your device, in your browser's own storage. We never receive the file, its title or any of its text.
Which files can it open?
PDF, EPUB, Word, TXT, FB2, CBZ comics, MOBI and AZW3 Kindle files without DRM, and audiobook files. Books bought with DRM in other stores cannot be opened.
How big can a book be?
A PDF up to 500 MB and an EPUB up to 200 MB. Very large files say so instead of crashing the phone.
Can I change the text size?
On EPUB, Word and text books, yes, and the typeface too. A PDF page is a picture of a page, so there you zoom instead.
Does it remember where I stopped?
Yes, on that device. Open the book again and it goes back to your page.
