Quiet Mind is a sleep tool for nights when your head won't stop, coming soon to Mixtuby. You stand the phone up, the screen goes black, and a soft light breathes with you, starting at your own pace and slowing down little by little. A dim number can count down with your breath, or a quiet voice can offer one easy word every few seconds, walk you through relaxing your body, or describe a calm scene, over real recordings of rain, waves, wind, a fire, a river or a summer night. Now and then a small amber button asks if you are still awake. When nobody presses it, Quiet Mind fades the sound out and turns itself off.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Open Quiet Mind

In Vibe Mode, tap the Sleep card.

  2. 2

    Pick a technique

Count, Words, Body, Scene, or Just breathe. Or the three in a row, Count then Words then Body.

  3. 3

Pick a sound and a pace

Rain, waves, wind, fire, river, night or a soft noise, five recordings of each. Then the pace your breathing is at tonight, or let it catch your rhythm from three breaths.

  4. 4

Stand the phone up and look at the dark

The light breathes with you. Taps are for when you need them; otherwise there is nothing to touch.

  5. 5

    Fall asleep

If you miss the "still awake?" check, it takes it that you are asleep, fades the sound out over a minute and stops.

Five Ways to Quiet Your Head

Count

Breath by breath

A dim amber number counts down from 300 in threes, one step on every breath.

Words

One every 8 seconds

Simple, unrelated words to picture one after another, so your mind drifts instead of solving problems.

Body

Seven parts

Tense, hold, let go, from your feet upwards, each step timed to your breath.

Scene

One line every few breaths

A calm place described a little at a time, with room to picture it.

Just breathe

No voice

Only the light and the sound, breathing slower and slower.

Why These Techniques Help You Fall Asleep

Each technique in Quiet Mind comes from sleep research. Words follows the "cognitive shuffle" of Luc Beaudoin at Simon Fraser University: picturing unrelated, harmless words keeps the mind from planning and worrying, which is how it behaves as we drift off. Scene follows a 2002 study by Allison Harvey and Suzanna Payne at Oxford, in which people who pictured a calm, detailed scene fell asleep faster than people left to their own thoughts. Body is progressive muscle relaxation, used in insomnia treatment for decades.

The breathing light starts at your pace and slows towards about six breaths a minute; slow breathing like this calms the body down. And the "still awake?" check means the tool never needs you to switch it off.

It is not a treatment for insomnia. If you sleep badly most nights for weeks, a doctor can help, and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the approach with the strongest evidence.

Quiet Mind — FAQ

When will Quiet Mind be available?

It is being finished now. Until it opens, the button on this page plays sleep music.

How does it know I fell asleep?

It asks. About ten minutes in, and every few minutes after, a small amber button appears for half a minute. If nobody taps it, Quiet Mind takes it that you are asleep, fades the sound out over a minute and stops. It does not listen to you or track your movement.

Which sounds are there?

Real recordings of rain, waves, wind, a fire, a river and a summer night, five of each, plus brown noise, pink noise and a deep hum.

Does it score my sleep?

No. It keeps a short diary of your nights, such as how long it took to fall asleep. There are no sleep stages and no scores, because a phone can't measure those honestly.

Can I use it again if I wake up in the night?

Yes. Between midnight and five in the morning it goes straight back in, without the start screen.

Is my sleep information stored anywhere?

The diary stays in this browser. If you are signed in, it is kept with your account so it follows you to another phone.
